FTBT 2018 Top 10 Woodworking and DIY Projects

As 2018 comes to a close, I wanted to take time to look back at some of my top woodworking and DIY projects for the year.  I was going to use views or some other metric to rank them, but I decided I’ll make it my own personal top 10.  So if you’ve just recently found FixThisBuildThat.com or haven’t seen all the projects this will be a great way to see some of my favorite woodworking projects you may have missed.

Before we get started, make sure to follow me on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram to keep up with all my latest builds!

FTBT Top 10 Woodworking & DIY Projects of 2018

For my top 10 projects list I have Shop Projects, DIY Furniture Builds, and some Home DIY projects.  If you want to see even more of these types of projects just click on the links and it will take you to the category for each one.  But without further ado, here is the list!

#10 – DIY Drill Press Stand with Storage

Coming in at the #10 spot is my DIY Drill Press Stand with Storage.  I got a new JET drill press in 2018 and wanted it to have a better home.  My earlier stand was an old kitchen cabinet with three deep drawers which aren’t great for small items.  I upgraded my drill press stand with four shallow drawers and one deep one to hold all my accessories.  It’s also mobile which I love.  I have detailed plans available along with a video walk through on the post.

#9 – DIY Tall Dresser with 6 Drawers

In the #9 spot for the year was a much needed project for my daughter, the DIY Tall Dresser with 6 Drawers.  We’d been keeping her clothes in her closet with plastic storage bins and that just wasn’t cutting it.  So like any self-respecting woodworking dad, I had to remedy that situation!  It also matches her DIY Daybed I made last year which is a nice bonus.  I have detailed plans available along with a video walk through on the post.

#8 – DIY Desk with Drawers

Project #8 of the year was also one for my daughter (much to the chagrin of my sons).  The DIY Desk with Drawers is another matching piece in the set I’m building for her, but this time I went with a nice hardwood cherry top.  This DIY desk is going to be a great spot for her to do homework and let her creativity run with the drawings she loves to do.  I have detailed plans available along with a video walk through on the post.

#7 – How to Install Wainscoting | DIY Board and Batten

For project #7 I’m jumping into the Home DIY realm.  In my How to Install Wainscoting (DIY Board and Batten) post I renovated our laundry room.  The wainscoting adds a great look to a small room and totally changed the old outdated appearance.  It’s a great project to freshen up any room.  I have a full video on the blog post and also include a SketchUp file to plan out your own wainscoting.

#6 – DIY Wall Cabinets with 5 Storage Options

Shop storage is always a favorite of mine, so at #6 I have another storage build, the DIY Wall Cabinets with 5 Storage Options.  These upper cabinets are just the start of my full overhaul of my old shop cabinets.  I’ll have plenty more to come and already did some base cabinets in 2017 for a different part of the shop.  I’m pumped to add a ton more to the list and whip my shop into shape!  Get the detailed plans here and there is a full video on the blog post.

#5 – How To Make a Resin and Wood Segmented Bowl

For the #5 project I went with the How To Make a Resin and Wood Segmented Bowl project.  I did a couple firsts with this project.  It was my first time doing segmented turning and first time turning epoxy resin.  I’ve been doing more and more wood turning projects and it’s really a fun process.  You can check out the whole vid on the post.

#4 – DIY Epoxy River Table with Waterfall

In the #4 spot was another epoxy resin project.  My DIY Epoxy River Table with Waterfall was the first time I used epoxy resin and it was quite the learning experience.  I used an expensive epoxy for this one that lets you pour really thick, but there are also cheaper alternatives out there.  Epoxy definitely blew up this year and this was a fun project to try it out on.  Check the whole video on the blog post.

#3 – How to Restore an Old Wooden Playset

Project #3 was one that needed to be done for a long time.  My How to Restore an Old Wooden Playset project couldn’t have come to soon because it was in really bad shape.  But after a little powerwashing and some new stain it came out perfect.  And this one really took off on my YouTube channel and is my most viewed video to date.

#2 – Remodeling a Small Bathroom

Okay #2 is really #2a and #2b.  I did a full remodel of a small bathroom in our house and turned it into two posts, How to Tile a Bathroom Floor and DIY Small Bathroom Remodel.  If you’re looking to do some remodeling in 2019 or beyond then you’ll want to check these out and see some of the things I ran into and how I dealt with them.

#1 – How to Make a Desk with Hidden Wireless Charging

And in the #1 spot for my favorite project of 2018 was the How to Make a Desk with Hidden Wireless Charging post.  I loved it so much because I got to weld a project on my own with my new welder and also incorporated an inlayed bow tie and wireless charging into the top.  It was definitely a stretch project and I loved tying in the technology side of things.  You can see the whole video on the post for this one as well.

I hope you enjoyed these projects as much as I enjoyed making them!  I’m looking forward to 2019 and all the great things to come and I’m so glad to have you along for the ride.  Let me know below in the comments what you’d like to see me make in 2019!
